Wisconsin's Graduated Driver's License
...Changes for new drivers
GDL trains students to become safe drivers.
GDL encourages parents and other adult sponsors to partner with students to help
them learn the basics of safe driving.
In addition, approved Driver Education courses are offered at many high schools
and licensed commercial driving schools.
TEMPS (Learner's Permit)
-Continuing Law
- Must be 15 1/2, may only drive with adult sponsor
- Must pass vision, knowledge test
- Enrolled in behind-the-wheel driver ed course
- No alcohol
- Must wear seat belt
-GDL Changes - NEW!
- Need 30 hours of driving experience to get probationary license (added Feb
1, 2000)
- Must have received no traffic tickets for 6 months prior to applying for
probationary license (Added Sept 1, 2000)
- Must hold temps 6 months to get probationary license (Added Sept 1, 2000)
- Temps suspended for 6 months if receive 12 or more points in 12 months -
applies to all new drivers, regardless of age (Added Sept 1, 2000)
- Points doubled for every traffic ticket after first - applies to all new
drivers, regardless of age (Added Sept 1, 2000)
Probationary License
-Continuing Law
- Must complete driver ed course and pass road test
- Must be 16
- Can drive alone without sponsor
- Must wear seat belt
- No alcohol
-GDL Changes - NEW!
- Points doubled for every traffic ticket after first - applies to all new
drivers, regardless of age (Added Sept 1, 2000)
- Probationary license suspended for 6 months if receive 12 or more points
in 12 months - applies to all new drivers, regardless of age (Added Sept 1,
2000)
These restrictions in effect first 9 months or until 18, but can be
extended:
- Can drive alone but passengers limited: only 1 passenger, immediate family
members and qualified adult (Added Sept 1, 2000)
- No driving midnight to 5 a.m. with some exceptions (Added Sept 1, 2000)
Note! Restrictions can be extended for traffic ticket; suspension or
revocation of probationary license; or violation of these restrictions.

Regular License
-Continuing Law
- To get regular license, must hold probationary license 2-3 years
- Must be at least 19
- No doubling of points if receive traffic ticket
- Must wear seat belt
- No alcohol
-No GDL Changes
