2004 Annual Report

County/Tribal Law Enforcement Grant – 2004:

The CTLE grant program in 2004 continued its success with existing programs and added additional areas of emphasis.

Traffic enforcement and officer presence at Rainbow Casino continued.

Line officers and jail staff received some Cultural Awareness training, which will help us understand the native culture and beliefs.

We conducted several Special Native American youth programs including; Alcohol Awareness, ATV/Dirt Bike Laws and Safety, Neighborhood Watch, K-9, Gun Safety, Stranger Danger and Drug Awareness.

The Department continued its successful practice of individualized property protection when notified service is needed.  The number of residential burglaries experienced by Native American families is minuscule when compared to pre-grant days.  In addition to protection of financial resources, this program has had the casual effect of providing a feeling of safety and well being for the community.

The opportunity to meet and discuss problems between the department and tribal members was also present.  A variety of issues were discussed and suitable compromise and solutions were reached regarding the issues.

The Wood County Sheriff’s Department and the tribe enjoy a unique working arrangement regarding law enforcement/casino issues. Both Rainbow Casino and the Wood County Sheriff’s Department look for this relationship to continue.
