                 THE WOOD COUNTY SHERIFF DEPARTMENT HAS A JAIL CAPACITY OF 137
                  PRISONERS AFTER THE RE-BUILDING PROCESS WAS COMPLETED IN 1988.
                  THE JAIL EMPLOYS 28 PEOPLE AND IS SUPERVISED BY A JAIL
                  ADMINISTRATOR AND HIS STAFF.  THE JAIL ALSO HAS A KITCHEN STAFF
                  OF 2 FULL-TIME AND TWO HALF-TIME EMPLOYEES, WHO PREPARE ALL
                  THE MEAL FOR THE JAIL POPULATION.            

 

 

HISTORY OF WOOD COUNTY JAIL

YEAR

HISTORY

1985

Jail Study Committee completed report and made recommendations regarding the jail situation in Wood County.

1987

Ground broken for new addition and renovation of the old Jail. Construction plans called for 111 beds.

1988

Present jail partially completed and moved into during late-March 1988.  While holding prisoners in new section, the old jail built in 1955-56 was remodeled.

1991

North courtyard was covered with a screen so inmates could use area for recreation in warm weather.

1992

Additional beds (26) added by replacing single bunks with bunk beds in the Huber and Medium Sections.  This increased the total bed space to 137 beds.

Addition of cameras/monitors to better view the courtyard and other areas of the jail.

1993

Purchase acoustic tiles to be placed in halls and non-cell areas.

Remodeling of staff area by installation of cabinets.

Began use of independent cleaning service to assist in care of floors.

1994

Purchase additional acoustic tiles for placement on hallways.

Computer-Aided Dispatch program installed.

1995

Jail Management Computer System installed.

Wiring of communication equipment in Courthouse to Jail backup power plant.

Wiring of 911 phone lines to the Jail backup power plant.

Approval of purchase of new radio consoles to be completed January 1996.

Approval of remodeling Control Center to be completed January 1996.  (Includes new entry door, key pad lock system, new service window, intercoms, pass-through windows, lighting, heating, cooling, carpeting)

Approval of remodeling a medium block to meet ADA Requirements in regarding to handicapped persons to be completed January 1996.

Sheriff & Traffic Committee informed that Jail has exceeded its projected population as determined by the 1985 Jail Study Report for 2005.  It was recommended that a new Jail Study Committee be appointed to study the situation. 

1996

Completed installation of new radio consoles.

Completed remodeling of Control Center.

Completed remodeling of a medium block to meet ADA Requirements (Americans With Disabilities Act).

Formation of Jail Feasibility Study Adhoc Committee (March 1996).

1997

1/30/97 - Laundry Soap Dispenser System Installed by EcoLab.

Painted:  Maximum Hall, Huber Hall, Jail Entry, Blocks A, B, C, D, and E.

Food passes installed in L, X, Y, and Z.

Install Ecolab cleaning and laundry dispenser.

Install new visiting phones in Main Entry Area.

O.J.A. Grant awarded for Badger Scan Fingerprint System.

N.I.C. Grant awarded and Committee formed for Community Corrections Study.

Keyless Entry System installed on specific doors.

New Lighting System (energy efficient).

1998

4/30/98             Immigration & Naturalization Fingerprint Equipment installed.

6/98  CLUES Jail Management System sells out to TIBURON (also includes Records and CAD).

6/11/98             Installed Dishwashing Chemical System from EcoLab.

8/17/98             Card Scan Fingerprint Equipment installed.

8/18/98             County Board votes down request for two additional Dispatcher/Corrections Officers. 

8/25/98             Cellblocks K and L converted to negative pressure blocks.

9/17/98 Jail given a radio frequency; no longer using Tach I.

1999

Interfaced CLUES with Card Scan System.

New Jail Van.

Jail Expansion Discussion.

Two new Dispatcher/Corrections Officer Positions approved for 2000.

Discussion on separating Dispatch and Corrections positions.

Approval of Digital Mug Shot Camera (install in 2000).

Upgraded Jail Heating Controls.

Offer Huber Inmates GED Class one evening per week.

Discussion on Jail Chaplain Program.

Exploring Jail Management Software.

Credit card use approved for bonds.   

2000

Continue exploring Jail Management Software.

Digital mug shots installed.

Upgrade some computers.

Moves Jail Lieutenant to different office area.

Two new employees hired.

Approved for two additional employees in 2001.

Discussion on starting AA in 2001.

Purchase of computer for Inmate Education Program.

Created a temporary Jail Control Position on peak shifts.

Continued discussion on separation of Dispatch and Corrections positions.

Jail expansion discussion continues.

2001

2 – additional Dispatch/Corrections Officer to start (total 28).

AA program starts back up in the jail.

Increased hours for the HSGED program (inmate education).

New mattresses placed in the jail.

Inmates sent to other county jails due to overcrowding.

New jail approved by the County Board – No funding given.

Continued discussions on separating Dispatch and Corrections positions.

Discharge Planner hired, funded by grant monies.

Funds approved for video arraignment installation in 2002.

Jail contracted medical health care services/doctor comes to the jail.

Finalizing a new central records system to be installed in 2002.

New Lieutenant, Sergeant, and Corporal appointed to fill retirements effective 1/2/02.

Approval for 2nd transport officer approved for 2002.

Approval for 2 additional Dispatch/Correction officers for 2002.

2002

Electronic Monitoring Program started.

New software installed for jail monetary/accounting system.

Day reporting system initiated.

Separation of Dispatch & Corrections – finalized to start January 2003.

Grant obtained for Live Scan – an automated fingerprint system.

Security Camera System in Jail replaced and upgraded to color. 

Jail Fire Alarm System was replaced.  Included integration of security alarms monitored by Dispatch.

Replacement of Jail Security Control System was approved and bid was awarded in December 2002 with installation to be completed June 2003.

CIS Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) software was brought on-line in December.

2003

Stun Pack ordered from Electronic Defense Tech LLC (Nov 2002).

Nine People trained on Stun Pack for use for transports/court.

Painting in all Huber cells begins.  Baseboard removed and caulk used to seal floor/walls.  Tile floors cleaned and waxed.

Painting entire jail.

140 new 4x25x75 Derby mattresses ordered.

Taser ordered for jail.

Replace/Upgrade all visit booth phones.

LiveScan for fingerprints ordered by Cpl. Greycarek is installed and staff trained.

Work on new door lock system for all cells begins.  Work completed June 12, 2003.

Retile entire jail floor area (Department patch included).

Guard Plus Pipe system for cell checks installed.

Installation of new book in cabinets.

Remove lockers and install garment bags.

Changes to Jail Rule Book made.

Ping-Pong room converted to storage room w/shelving.

All corrections staff trained on Taser.

2004

All floors, cells, common rooms, and offices waxed.

Garrett handheld metal detector for Discharge Planner.

Corrections staff trained on 10-minute air bottles and fire extinguishers.

Air bottles placed in Maximum, Medium, Huber, Book-In, and hose cabinets in hallways.

New laundry cart and new inmate totes for personal items in cells.

Dispatch moves to Emergency Management area.  Door Control stays in control.

New cabinets in mug room.

Carpet replaced in Door Control.

Work station installed in Door Control.

Hand sanitizer issued at all work stations and nurse office.

X26 Tasers for Jail Corporal and Jail Sergeant.

Four new TV’s for cellblocks (replacements).

Morpho Touch Fast ID at book-in.

Ordered ten new TV’s for jail cells.

Five new Derby mattresses ordered.

Jail Inspection done.
